Experience
Lowell has been a Certified Public Accountant for over 20 years. His professional
experience spans both public accounting and private industry, serving
construction contractors and unions to manufacturers and not-for-profits.
After 4 years in public accounting performing compilations, reviews and
audits as well as preparing tax returns,
Lowell moved into the not-for-profit sector. He served as controller of
a very large social service agency as well as within the United Way system
for nearly 16 years. He subsequently was Vice-President of Finance and
CFO for a social service agency serving developmentally disabled clients
prior to joining Ahlbeck & Company in July 2008.
With nearly 20 years serving not-for-profits, Lowell has developed expertise
in this industry to resolve both common and unique issues. He is very
experienced in internal financial reporting, including aspects related
to preparation of financial statements and Form 990, IT systems,
budgeting/trend analysis, consolidations, expense allocations and agency
reorganization to increase efficiencies and reduce excess costs. Lowell
is also experienced with OMB Circular A-133 engagements, Consolidated
Financial Reports and other grant reporting. Although he specializes in
serving not-for-profits, Lowell has also prepared employee benefit plan
filings as well as payroll tax returns and related compliance reporting.

Education
and Affiliations
Lowell earned
a B.A. in
Accounting from the University of Iowa and is a member of the American Institute
of Certified Public Accountants. He is also a member of the Illinois CPA
Society and has served on the Society's Not-for-Profit Committee for several
years, including their NFP Conference Task Force.
